The assignment is a 2500 written report that addresses a number of questions relating to management of the global supply chain within a selected case study.  The details are set out below.  Please read this document carefully and follow the guidelines provided. 
 
You will begin work in small groups while you familiarise yourselves with the case study and concepts, working towards formative assessment points – an opportunity to receive feedback from your tutors to enhance your final report. Please take this opportunity seriously, as tutors will not be able to provide individual feedback outside of this process.
 
The second stage of your assessment will be completed individually.
 
STEP1: FORMATIVE
Your tutors will assign you a case study from the list below. You should read the case study carefully and search for supporting information about the company or similar organisations within the same sector.
 
Formative exercise 1 – seminars week of 4.3.13

  1. In your group, prepare a presentation of 3 slides (or flip chart sheets) that describes and illustrates a map of your case company’s supply chain (include as much as you can both ‘upstream’ to manufacturing and materials and ‘downstream’ to distribution, consumption and even recycling).
  2. Explain the roles of main suppliers and/or customers and identify any issues that emerge that might affect the way the supply chain is managed.
 
Formative exercise 2 - seminars week of 8.4.13 and 15.4.13
  1. Working in groups evaluate your supply chain in the context of process / demand variation and uncertainty; buffering mechanisms (inventory, capacity and time) and postponement. 
  2. Discuss how these concepts can be used to explain the different strategies adopted along the supply chain; making reference to laws, theories and models.   Be prepared to discuss in class.
 
STEP 2: SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT – INDIVIDUAL REPORT.
Write a report of 2500 words (+/- 10%) that addresses the following questions with reference to your allocated case study.
 
  1. What are the strategic and competitive priorities affecting the lead organisation? How has the supply chain developed in response to these.  How does the supply chain contribute to customer value?
 
  1. How is the supply chain structured. Map out (in words and diagrams) the stages that you can identify, the organisations involved in each stage and the functions they perform. How does the structure relate to your answer to Question 1?
 
  1. How do the concepts of variation, uncertainty, buffering mechanisms and postponement  relate  to your case study supply chain? Why have the associated strategies  been adopted?
                                                                                                                               
  1. Discuss how 3 of the following aspects of supply chain management are aligned to the  competitive priorities you have identified in Question 1.
 
i.         Globalisation/ localisation,
ii.       the number and choice of suppliers,
iii.      the types of buyer-supplier relationships that have developed
iv.     adoption of new technologies
v.       choice of downstream distribution channels
 
In your report:
Use a report format, including contents, introduction, main body, conclusions and recommendations and a list of references.  Include diagrams and tables to illustrate your answers. 
 
References and Appendices
RELEVANT supporting evidence can be included in an appendix.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated – summarise ALL sources in your own words and provide a comprehensive list of references (including the case study)
 
You should use a variety of academic sources, including books and journal articles, and should search for additional information relating to your case company, its competitors or comparable cases.  All sources must be correctly referenced using the HARVARD referencing system.  See the LLR Guide to citation and referencing at
 
Handing in
Hand in your work in hard copy to the Link Lounge, Newton 7th Floor by 24th May at 12 noon.  Please also submit an identical electronic copy to the Dropbox by the same deadline.
